What does God say about our physical bodies?​

  • I Corinthians 3:16-17​

“Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you?  If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him; for God’s temple is sacred, and you are that temple.”​

  • I Corinthians 6:19-20​

“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?  You are not your own; you were bought at a price.  Therefore, honor God with your body.”​

  • II Corinthians 6:16​

“What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols?  For we are the temple of the living God.”​

  • Romans 12:1-2​

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship.  Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.  Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will.”​

  • I Samuel 15:22​

“Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the Lord?  To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.”​

Besides, this physical body is a “gift”—it can be taken away if not properly utilized!​

  • Matthew 25:15-30​

“To one he gave five talents of money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his ability….​

…’Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents.  For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance.  Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him.  And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’”​

Does how one eats affect one’s salvation?

  • John 14:6​

“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.’”​

  • Deuteronomy 14:1-21​

Commands concerning foods​

To set the Israelites apart—”Out of all the peoples on the face of the earth, the Lord has chosen you to be his treasured possession.”​

To allow for long life in the land they were about to be given.​

  • You are what you eat!​

What about Peter’s vision?​

  • Acts 10:15 ​

“Again a voice came to him a second time, ‘What God has cleansed, no longer consider unholy.’”​

In Acts 11:28, Peter explains his vision:  “And he said to them, ‘You yourselves know how unlawful it is for a man who is a Jew to associate with a foreigner or to visit him; and yet God has shown me that I should not call any man unholy or unclean.’"​

  • God was speaking of the Gentiles, not food.​

  • Acts 11:3 ​

Peter is accused of eating unclean food, then explains why (and how) God allowed this. Through the whole passage, we see that Peter ate what was for the gain of the gospel, for the salvation of others. It does not say that he ate whatever he wanted to.​

  • 1 Corinthians 10:23-33​

This passage explains the reason for eating otherwise evil things is the salvation of others, not the satisfaction of your tongue.​

“’Everything is permissible”—but not everything is beneficial.  ‘Everything is permissible’—but not everything is constructive.  …So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God…so that they may be saved.”​

  • 1 Corinthians 6:12​

All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything.​

How to eat food and drink water!

READ LABELS!

  • Avoid hydrogenated oils, trans fats, chemical sugar substitutes (Splenda, Nutrasweet, Equal), nitrites/nitrates, artificial ingredients, high fructose corn syrup, sodium benzoate, and anything else you can’t pronounce.​

  • Avoid sodium lauryl/laureth sulfates, parabens, petrolatum, mineral oil, and aluminum topically.​

D I E T

  • Adopt a whole foods diet, organic when possible, locally grown in season.​

  • Consume grass-pastured ​

beef ONLY (if you eat beef).​

  • Aim for 5 different ​

vegetables and 2 fruits daily​

 (mixed colors).

Easier Places to Shop

  • PCC, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s​

  • Natural/organic food sections of Safeway, QFC, Costco, etc.​

  • Farmers’ Markets​

  • Organic, local CSAs​

Be Prepared!

  • Recognize potential for food allergies/intolerances​

  • - “One man’s meat is another man’s poison!”​

  • Rotate foods you can consume healthily.​

AVOID MICROWAVE USE!

WATER

  • Drink filtered water​

- 1/3 to 1/2 your    body weight in fluid ounces DAILY

Messages in water?!​

  • Japanese scientist’s experiments​

  • Earth’s water composition​

  • Body’s water composition​

  • Intra- and inter-cellular communication​

  • Cells contain/retain memory​

EXERCISE DAILY!

  • Move your body everyday, rain or shine, inside or out.​

  • For weight loss, exercise at 65% maximum heart rate for at least 40 minutes, 6 days a week.​

  • -”Start low, go slow.

Encouragement to Exercise:​

  • Proverbs 31:17 ​

  • “She girds herself with strength and makes her arms strong.”​​

  • Use it or lose it!​​

  • James 4:7​

  • “Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”​

  • There are many choices out there for health: food, herbs, medicine, various therapies, even choosing not to be healthy. We are to submit our choices to God.  In the next sentence, we are told to resist the devil; so when we submit to God, we can be assured that the devil will come against us whispering his lies. We must resist him in order to make him flee from us.

REFLECTION

  • List top 3 priorities in life.​

Does your lifestyle reflect those, in that order?​

If not, what steps need to be taken to truly walk your talk?​

More encouragement to choose wisely:​

  • Romans 12:21​

  • “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”​

  • Choose to eat something good—healthy, nutritious—showing respect for your physical body and the God who has lavished such a gift on you.​

  • James 4:17​

  • “Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.” ​

  • Ignorance may be bliss, but it’ll still kill you!​

Now what?​

  • I Thessalonians 5:19-24​

  • “Do not put out the Spirit’s fire; do not treat prophecies with contempt.  Test everything.  Hold on to the good.  Avoid every kind of evil.  May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through.  May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.  The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it.”​

And finally….​

  • Phillipians 4:8​

  • “Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.”​

  • Let your mind dwell on what is lovely and pure and worthy of praise, instead of dwelling on wanting to eat, or eating unconsciously.​
