It's a NEW YEAR! Want a new YOU?

Welcome, 2021! There was sufficient weirdness in 2020 to wave it goodbye with gusto!

How can we make 2021 ever so much better?

2020—and its pandemic which shut down the world—shed great light on our poor state of health. Not just infection with a normally innocuous, we-live-in-a-stew-of-germs-including-coronaviruses-everyday, this-isn’t-a-normal-coronavirus kind of issue. Rather, last year’s chaos—which, of course, is spilling over into this fresh new year—threw the health disparities and chronic disease profiles of billions of people into sharp relief.

We are an unhealthy lot.

The US spends more money on “health care” than any other country in the world—twice as much as the next big spender, even! Yet we have some of the worst health statistics on the globe:

We have more obesity than any other country in the world.

One in three adults has hypertension. Of the 68% being treated for their high blood pressure, only 44% have it “under control”. Hmm. THAT gets my pharmacist brain going!

Type 2 diabetes is more prevalent in the US than the other 37 “most developed” countries to which it was compared. In fact, of those 38 countries, the US claimed two-thirds of the entire diabetic count! Astonishing.

In “high income countries” (US, most of Europe), more than 50% of the adults had high cholesterol levels.

Our abysmal health statistics are becoming a national security issue, with about 75% of our young adults (aged 17-24) being turned away from joining any branch of military service because of their chronic underlying diseases.

I’m Christie Fleetwood. I used to be a pharmacist. When I got radically ill in my mid-twenties, the very medicine I knew and practiced failed me. When I changed pharmacy jobs for a slower pace and better “work/life balance”, I heard hundreds of similar stories about others having been failed by conventional medicine.

What do I mean by "failed by conventional medicine"?

I mean, all those customers that came to my pharmacy counter for prescriptions to fill, along with the story that the doctor had said there was no more to be done for them. This final phrase came after all the different drugs and procedures had been tried for cancer, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, depression, type 1 diabetes, bipolar 2, Alzheimer’s disease, hepatitis C, multiple sclerosis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, rheumatoid arthritis….

So I started studying—all the things we used to use before conventional medicine—which has only been around, as we know it, about a hundred years!

I was so intrigued by the many, many books I found on nutrition as medicine, high dose vitamins and minerals as medicine, water as medicine, hands-on-healing as medicine, essential oils as medicine, herbal remedies as medicine, homeopathic remedies as medicine, Chinese medicine, Ayurvedic medicine, mind-body medicine, exercise as medicine… that when I discovered there was an actual PROFESSION that practiced that kind of medicine, I quit my career, left everyone I knew, sold everything I owned, and moved to the other side of the universe to go back to school full time… and emerge with a doctorate in naturopathic medicine!

PLEASE DON’T “HEAR” ME SAY THAT CONVENTIONAL MEDICINE IS “BAD”. It’s not. There’s a time a place for nearly every drug and procedure we have on the market today.

Hear THIS, my friends: like everything else in life, conventional medicine comes at a price. Not just a financial price. If you have a chronic disease, you know exactly what I’m talking about, don’t you? There’s the physical price your body is paying. The social and emotional price you pay because of the discomfort of your chronic disease. The cost in missed time from work—and being looked over when promotion time rolls around. The cost in future events—the anxiety cost of chronic disease:

Who will… take care of my kids? My house? My spouse? ME? when I’m too ill to do so anymore? Right?

There’s also a nutritional cost. Drugs waste nutrients. And those deficiencies CAN BE your next diagnosis.

Look, as a pharmacist, I know the drugs better than most of the doctors that prescribe them.

As a naturopathic physician, I know how to REVERSE chronic disease!

SPOILER ALERT: it has to do with HOW WE LIVE!

As a passionate educator, I enjoy little else more than teaching, guiding, cheering patients and clients into vibrant health!
